Thriving Children, Healthy Families, thriving communities

Our Mission

Storyteller Children’s Center helps Santa Barbara’s homeless, at-risk toddlers and preschoolers achieve Kindergarten Readiness by providing therapeutic preschool and support services for their families.

Our Vision

A vibrant community in which all children enter into the school system ready to learn.

Core Values

  • Storyteller believes in every one of our families. We meet our families where they are in their journey, with warmth and acceptance.
  • Storyteller believes the parents know what is best for their child and are the child’s primary teachers. We are their partner in this process.
  • Storyteller values compassion, empathy, respect and integrity.
  • Storyteller provides a safe, supportive, trauma-informed, educational environment for our children, families and staff.
  • Storyteller values its collaborations with outside agencies and believes they are an integral part of Storyteller’s work.
  • Storyteller supports its teachers and staff by contributing to professional development opportunities and providing reflective practice for all.
  • Storyteller is extremely grateful for our staff, board members, community partners, and donors who make our programs possible.

Our Services

  • Year-round high quality preschool program for children 18 months to 5 years.
  • Kindergarten Readiness program.
  • Individual support services: speech, language, and occupational therapy.
Behavioral health services for children and their families.
  • Comprehensive family support services.
  • Nutritious breakfast, lunch and snack daily.

Our Families

  • Storyteller supports Santa Barbara County’s underserved preschool age children and their families.
  • Many families live in unsecure housing, in shelters, or with multiple families in a single residence, which can negatively impact child development.
  • Many families fall below the federal and state poverty guidelines.
  • An estimated two thirds of our children live in single parent homes.
